71. cradle song (with the ken lane singers)

“what jenni did today” is the subject title of the email I sent to the curator the first day I worked at the gallery and she asked me to recap what I did. I dressed in my one pair of mom jeans. Her rich friends came to visit in their designer brands and we sat around a tiny white table, them chit chatting and me interjecting with the odd joke. I didn’t get to do much, but I did pick up the vibe and the vibe was: “Welcome Jenni. You’ve Leveled Up.”

It’s not about surrounding myself with rich people because, after all, I’m not rich. I’m a working class Vietnamese girl living by herself in LA because I aspire to more than what my community wanted for me back home. Some are born with it and some have to work for it.

I intend to work for it.

Maybe I should’ve written,

“what jenni learned…”

(1. Don’t eat garlic
2. Be curious
3. Crack a joke
4. Come early
5. Dress well)

instead.
