54. tomb of the boom

Weather:

cold,

then warm,

then briefly hot possibly,

then cold again.

I will be in North Carolina in 10 days, followed by Tennessee. This month has been fun. There are two new coworkers at work and I like both of them so far. I went to Wingstop in a nearby city for dinner yesterday and realized I deserve more than a food service job. On my way home a fleet of firetrucks drove pass. I followed them because I wanted to see a fire. It’s funny how it worked out.

This fire started at 7:30 p.m., just 30 minutes before I arrived. The trucks drove through a neighborhood, so I parked at the end of the street and walked to the intersection where they began blocking pedestrians off. The brush fire was on the side of a hill. Everybody along the streets stood outside their homes, staring in their pajamas. One man asked another how he was doing and the man replied, “Not great, by the look of things.” I asked a woman if this happened often and she said, “No, this is the closest fire we’ve had in years.”

She asked me if I lived there and I told her no.

She asked me what I was doing there.

I said, “I was getting dinner.”

Before the cops fully showed up, I got back to my car and went to grab dessert. A cannoli and a guava pastry for breakfast the next day. I was very proud of myself for these decisions. California fires make the baby pyro in me happy. I used to burn piles of leaves in the back of my mom and dad’s billiards club for entertainment. I love watching things burn.

I have a day off tomorrow, so I’m trying to watch Ladybird at the Hammer Museum. Greta Gerwig is supposed to show up. I watched Frances Ha and liked it; I’ve heard good things about Ladybird. Diner day tomorrow? Yes, please.
